Photoshop plugins are an example of external programs
that modify an image inside a Xara document.

Which mechanism use Photoshop plugins to write their results
to an image embedded inside a Xara document?
Could we use this same mechanism to modify an embedded image
that was rendered and exported by some 3d program?

Probably, the fastest solution is enabling automatic updates of bitmap images,
that is not as complicated as bidirectional OLE linking or mind boggling stuff like this:
