    Hi Bob,

That is the insert for a 45 rpm record. Turntables have a pin the size of the centre hole of the insert, but 45 rpm records have a hole the size of the insert, thus requiring the insert; unless the turntable comes equipped with its own movable insert.

45 rpm records and LP records had exactly the same centre hole, for playing on a turntable, when bought over the counter at the record shop... but you were able to punch out the centre of a 45 rpm single so that it could be used in a jukebox

so if you bought ex-jukebox records you then needed one of these to replace the punched out bit for your turntable

not that I was old enogh to buy juke-box records at the time

[now where did I put that diamond ring...]

Not in Canada! I don't ever recall seeing a 45 with a small hole and I never bought an ex-jukebox 45. In the early 60's we would usually buy the hot new Beatles and other records at the Hudson's Bay department store. They always had an up to date list of the top 100, if I recall correctly. The problem was rounding up the money to buy one.

    Nice drawing.

I found one 45 record in a drawer in my office; now where is the insert?

I remember owning quite a few of those pictured Steve (including APACHE). Although I don't remember seeing the triangular centre of the LONDON record.

seems there are various names for this thinummyjig - we just called it a '45 insert' and that's what they were sold as where I lived...
