What is now called the Shape Tool (keyboard shortcut F4) was formerly called the Shape Editor Tool. This might be causing some of the confusion.

Thanks, Gary, for this clarification. However, I did try what's now called the Shape Tool, but it didn't do what the instructions showed. Rather than following the outline of the item whose color I wanted to change, it simply started making a rectangular shape (see small partial screenshot).

the tools do exactly what the instructions show but the user has to know how to use them
if not he has to learn how to use them
your posts show you are using the right tools but not as expected or instructed
the termoinology used is possibly/probably confusing you and this is a learning curve for you
this is not a program error, it is simply user inexperience and you will overcome it

you need to click to start a line and then click where you want each node to go next as you follow the outline, and then shift+click to finish

what you show looks like you were dragging the mouse - which is for node selection

Sorry, old habits - yes it's now called the Shape Tool. I've correct the mini tutorial.

Here's an older video showing the technique I use to draw around an object in a bitmap using the shape tool.

was done quickly and without too much attention but shows what can be done
with more time and patience you can achieve more precise realistic effects
the cutout was done using a combination of the shape tool (shape editor to us old hands) and the freehand and brush tool

i chose this particular photo because the hair of the original is both grey and not at all smoothly combed
obviously the more uniform the hair, the easier this operation is
this bloke did not comb his hair before going out on the town

Thanks VERY much, handrawn and sledger. Your two messages worked very well together to tell and show me how to use the Shape Tool.

And dyeing his hair did not do much for him either . But I do agree with csehz that the blond and, to a lesser extent, the red versions are not too conspicuous.
