Apologies for not checking directly in XWD!
The fallback therefore has to be using Notepad or Character Map to enter the quotes there and then copy & paste.

Hi Guys maybe I'm missing something here (being Canadian feet and inches is something I seldom need to use) but can't you just use the quotation mark/apostrophe key?

No. It is as incorrect as using a feet mark instead of an apostrophe.but can't you just use the quotation mark/apostrophe key?
Because more people use quote marks and apostrophe's than foot and inches marks, most programs automatically use curly quotes and apostrophes. But it is often necessary, giving the size of a painting, or other artwork, to provide the measurements in feet and inches, and 8' 9" is not correct if you use curly quotes and apostrophes (though it seems to be correct here).

it's maybe only necessary where metric measurement is still not in common useage - ie the USA and....... hummm...thinks...
anyway more seriously, what Gary says is true, you can get away with using non-smart for quote and apostrophe a lot of the time, but using smart quotes for feet and inches is far more liable to end up being confusing...

Ok thanks both of you. Here in Canada we use metric measurements and I very seldom need to describe anything in feet or inches, so I never knew that the feet and inches marks were any different than a quotation mark or an apostrophe. You learn something new everyday.
