Publish Export Problem

Hi,
I have been publishing a site with no problems in the past,"file publish website"
but all of a sudden it as stopped publishing and coming up with a export problem.
So this is what I do
file - publish website
"you need to export the site first" OK to a temp folder, (this works ok and the site in the temp folder works)
but then WDMX "error you must export your website before you can publish"
After a dozen attempts with changing some settings still not working

I have read the thread "Export and Upload probs"

is this a common problem?
