combination of two tools in designer pro - fill tool for the colors and transparency tool - use linear and double click on the line where you want to add handles in both cases
so given the tools, same in web designer

note - you can define a color for each handle in the fill tool, and a seperate level of transparency for each handle in the transparency tool

That's great. I'm playing around with this to get the hang of it but many, many thanks again for your very prompt help.
you can of course build up a colour ramp
say you had a red rectangle and gave it a transparency - then cloned it and changed the colour and gave that a transparency and then repeated it

[also by default you can apply additional transparency to a group as a whole]

Yes, the colour ramp idea look good. I assume I've done that correctly?, basically 3 rectangles of differing colours and transparency overlayed - looks pretty cool
yes thats the idea - then you can group and apply a final global transparency if you wish
