ONLOAD ONE TIME POPUP

Hi all!
I suppose this has been treated sometime but I can't find the post. What I want to do is to include an onload popup when a visitor arrives on the home page indicating the new and updated items on the site with links to the actual pages. It must be possible to close the popup. But what I don't want is when he/she returns to the home page during the same session the popup shows again. Analysis: new visitor on home page sees popup, closes popup or uses a link on the popup that is of interest but for what reason he returns to the homepage during the same visit the popup doesn't show any longer. Otherwise the popup become an nuissance iso a guide.

Any suggestions?

But preventing the popup showing again to the same visitor in the same session will require the use of a cookie, which is beyond me this morning.
