Thats great and I really appreciate it, but I'm looking to convert a variety of shapes.

In that case, I would use IrfanView instead.
Open the image, press 'S'
Choose PNG and check the 'Save transparent color' in the PNG options.
Press 'Save' then use the picker to select the white background as the colour to be transparent.
You will have some border pixels that are not quite white remaining
InfanView Sledger? I looked all over Xara and searched the help files but I could not find anything that was called InfanView. You must mean this InfanView?
Bob, there is a plug in that is included with Photo and Graphics Designer called Mehdi Eraser Classic.
Select your bitmap, click the Live Effects Tool (the electrical plug icon), Press New > on the Infobar, then select Mehdi > Mehdi Eraser Classic.
You may need to experiment with the Tolerance slider to get the cleanest outline.
Whenever possible, however, it is best to create a vector shape the same as the portion of the image you wish to preserve, then use the shape to mask the bitmap using Combine Shapes > Intersect Shapes or Apply ClipView (both found in the Arrange menu). This creates a vector edge to the bitmap which is always the smoothest and cleanest solution.
