    This was by a Belgian artist called Antoine Wiertz - "Hunger, Madness, Crime" - 1864 (using the book Steve found as a search reference). Good job on finding it guys, I think it's a pretty obscure painting ...

    ... pretty grim aswell.

    OK thanks Steve. Silly me, I could have sworn it was a bear knee of someone setting at the table. However in light of your comment I can plainly see it is a thumb.
