So how can one get the centre of a circle to be snapped to a grid as a default rather than an edge?

Turn on Snap to grid, use 'radius creation'.

When moving the circle the centre will not snap to grid unless you select the circle icon it will always snap to circumference.

Unless of course the circle is the same size as the grid spacing

Try grabbing the circle at the center (little x) and drag it over grid point.

When selecting circle object to move you do not get the centre point unless you then do another selection on the circle icon tool.

That means 2 operations - that is what I was trying to say:-))

What I want is when the circle is selected I want the centre point to be shown, then have the choice of moving the circumference or the centre to the grid.

I would also thought that the circle centre was more important for alignment purposes than the circumference.

In my understanding after Switching on the Window/Show grid and seeing the small + marks, only visually can be "snap" the objects and not by the Snap to objects button automatically.

Currently I am doing that switching on also the Rulers and creating a vertical and horizontal one, which are exactly going through one of the small + grid sign. In that case the Snap to objects already works automatically to this cross point, so also a circle center or anything

    Hi Peter,

Capturing the actual cursors proved to be elusive, so I drew what you will see.
    Snap to grid=On.
When you draw a circle (Ellipse tool -L) and choose Radius creation the cursor is like the left image; just place the center of the crosshair on the grid mark and drag the circle. If you miss, no need to change tools from the Ellipse tool, just move crosshairs over the circle center (little x) and the cursor changes to the right image and it allows you to drag the circle back over a grid mark where it snaps.

My posting was about the moving of a circle.

To do it requires two operations Select the circle and then click on Circle icon or L to show the centre.

What I want is when the circle is selected that the centre cross hair is shown.

Double click the ellipse, Xara will auto switch to the Ellipse tool and your cross hair will be available.
