OK I'll revise what I just said after trying it out ( ). If you remove the space between two paragraphs of differing styles, both styles will exist in what appears to be one paragraph. We'll assume the first style is Normal Text. And we'll call the second style Normal Text 2.
The second style will lose its name and appear as Normal Text +. If you duplicate the two paragraphs, modify either of the paragraphs and create a new style, then both the Normal Text paragraph and the Normal Text + will take on the characteristics of the Updated Style.
