The battery is fully charged, and as I haven't had it unplugged since it is staying at 100% One other thing I did yesterday was to use an external monitor but I don't see why that should have caused any problems.

Frances the external monitor would not have made a difference. Laptop batteries do not last forever they lose capacity over time at about 20% per year.

Frances if you keep the existing battery and buy a backup, alternate them regularly rather than keep one on a shelf.
