I don't understand the spherical objects

These are the lids on the glass containers.

the lower right shadow does not connect up properly to it's casting object

You're right Larry. I didn't notice. The shadows are completely Blender, I will have a look at it and see how I can change (right now, I don't have a clue...)

@James - thanks for the comments - I'll try the roll-up, but I'm not sure it will work with the wood-texture
