you need 'convert line to shape' Ben
ctrl+shift+S is 'convert to editable shapes' - works on quick shapes and text etc but not on unclosed lines - there is no standard key shortcut for 'convert line to shape' but you can set one in pro version
[RE-EDIT - I get what appear to be inconsistant results using ctrl+shift+s ]

I've been trying over and over and re-reading your post and unfortunately cannot seem to duplicate your problem. I seem to recall that sometimes I have run into that problem, but not consistently, and when I did I don't know what caused it, nor can I really remember anything about it. Just for your information I tried subtracting using CTRL2, slicing, elliptical line, everything but they all worked as expected.

Never give up. You will never fail, but you may find a lot of ways that don't work.
Thanks for all the help. Yeah, I will just convert it to a shape because I do this a lot creating cartoon characters in Designer Pro. It is a lot of work to zoom in and clean up those few extra vector points. But I understand that it is a line instead of a shape, so I'll convert it before subtracting. Thanks again.
I want to still be working in this program when I'm an old man sitting in my recliner.
