I also get the greyed out check mark in XDP7. It looks like the page background layer is unlocked, try selecting the background and use the method in post #7. I reckon it may work.

Thanks Drwyd... 7 is the lucky number.
Overiding the greyed out option by using the shadow tool directly works fine.
Isn't it funny how these things are so obvious once all the learned routines are put to one side.
No more shadow boxing, thanks again.
