Here's what I found: I added a plane, added a new texture (image) and it doesn't render.
What I didn't know then, is that I also have to add a material to the plane, before adding the texture. Working that way - adding plane, material, texture - renders as it should

That makes perfect sense.
In my workflow, if I'm adding a plane with image mapped to it, the first thing I do is add the material and turn off the specularity, so had never run into this problem of adding a texture without having attached the material (of which the texture is a sub-element).
