    I gave this a go and tried a bit of a different method, first I gave my text a linear fill thus eliminating the rectangle, and I used in my example a blend between two ellipses I used one white one with an elliptical transparency and one smaller yellow one.

    I clipped the blend to the text. This doesn't eliminate the outline but unless it's just because of the colours I used it seems to make it much less noticeable. I had to zoom in to 1000% before I began to see it and even then I needed my glasses to be sure. It appears only where the colours are blending.

    Thanks for your comments everyone, it seems to be a popular effect.
    Lots of fine examples of its use.
    A contour seems to be a solution to the line problem.
