    Default Sepia Treatment for Photo?

    Hi
Does anyone have a process they've found to turn a color photo into a sepia tone? Just dropping a dark color on the photo doesn't seem to work very well because it just masks the detail.

I've attached the photo so you have an idea what I am working with...

    Thanks!

    Hi Joe,

Using something like PhotoShop or Paint.net works well...but it can be done easily within XDP6 by using plug-ins. I used the free plug-in virtualPhotographer within XDP6 to all but one-click my way to sepia bliss.

Set Contone Dark Color, draggiing a color onto the photo makes light areas darker thus thus reducing the contrast between light and dark areas, therefore it appears that you are loosing the detail. Here is an example so you can see the difference.
    Does this help?
Oh yeah I almost forgot, I used XDP6 and it was super easy.

Actually this is quite easy to do in Xara by editing the contones with the colour editor. Here is a tutorial that shows the process. http://board.xara-users.info/viewtopic.php?p=848

Joe is the end result to simulate an old photo?

In addition to using the dark contone technique already mentioned, adding some noise will help simulate the grain often seen in old photos.

Live Effects > Distortion filter > Add noise works well for the grainy effect.

Thanks to both of you! (This Tom Sawyer approach works great, it seems. ) And by the way, what is a "Contone" color...it popped up once when I clicked on a color and I haven't looked it up, yet. (Ah, there's Tom again, it seems.)
    Again, really appreciate the help.

I don't know what the definition of "Contone" is but it is useful for changing photos to a monochrome color other color schemes. You can set the contone after selecting your "bitmap" then by right clicking a color on the color line or selecting your imagte and clicking on the color editor. You are not limited to just a monochrome effect but you can chang both the light and dark contones to give some real interesting effects.
    see below for example.

Not to confuse you further but this might be helpful.

OK maybe we need to back up a bit. So what software are you using?
What plugin are you talking about?
I use XDP6 for almost everything. I do not use WD nor do I have it installed because I do not do web design.
