Not positive but I believe the difference is a FLV file is similar to Photoshop's PSD file in that it can be edited in Flash (the FLV file). And if this is true, when you do this Flash breaks the FLV file into frames with all the applied commands in place and editable.

A SWF is a file that is output from Flash (or other applications) that plays as a single frame or video using the Flash player.

I think flv is flash video, fla is the native file that can be edited in flash and swf is like an exported flash object that embeds into a website and could be a player that plays an external flv for example.

    According to Wikipedia

Flash Video is a container file format used to deliver video over the Internet using Adobe Flash Player versions 6–10. Flash Video content may also be embedded within SWF files. There are two different video file formats known as Flash Video: FLV and F4V. The audio and video data within FLV files are encoded in the same way as they are within SWF files. The latter F4V file format is based on the ISO base media file format and is supported starting with Flash Player 9 update 3.[1][2] Both formats are supported in Adobe Flash Player and currently developed by Adobe Systems. FLV was originally developed by Macromedia.

The format has quickly established itself as the format of choice for embedded video on the web. Notable users of the Flash Video format include YouTube, Hulu, Google Video, Yahoo! Video, metacafe, Reuters.com, and many other news providers.

The standards documentation for BBC Online states that the BBC now preferentially accepts Flash videos for submission, to the disadvantage of other formats previously in use on its sites[3] such as RealVideo or WMV.

Flash Video FLV files usually contain material encoded with codecs following the Sorenson Spark or VP6 video compression formats. The most recent public releases of Flash Player also support H.264 video and HE-AAC audio. All of these codecs are currently restricted by patents.

Flash Video is viewable on most operating systems, via the Adobe Flash Player and web browser plugin or one of several third-party programs.
    When in doubt, Google it.

I've always treated flv files as editable files and swf files (uneditable) as the movie version of that flv/fla
