After rumination I've decided it's Pop-Art*, not utilitarian I think I was intrigued how the bit that was taken away was filled, the filled bit was taken away and the duplication appeared from nowhere ... all from 'joining shapes'. Xara is FUN, isn't it!

Or as a button with 99.5% transparency over the focal point?

    Very nice effect.
I am always very interested to understand perfectly the behaviour of every tool, I can't realize in this case when you make the join why the text appears repeated.
    Could somebody explain me that?.

I don't know either, but it only takes from one bevel (the second image had three different bevel types to choose from) whether the circles are grouped or not. The background 'joins' to the bevel, but why it repeats ...

I think I found the explanation.
When you join two shapes the front shape makes a hole in the shape behind and fill it with the fill of the front shape.
When you convert the beveled shape to editable shapes and ungroup the bebel now is a repeated bitmap.
When you join this bitmap with the shape, the shape is fill it with this repeated bitmap that's the reason why it appears repeated over the shape.
    un abrazo
    Javier
