Autocorrect: It can be your worst enema.
Can Paul or someone not as stupid as me tell me why he drew the island, then made bitmap copy and then did an auto trace of the copy? The only thing that I can think of is to get rid of the smoothness of the drawing.
Design is thinking made visual.
Albacore, you are quite correct: I did the trace to achieve a more hand drawn look. If you are happy with a smooth look, then just skip the tracing parts. I traced the paper for the same reason.
I was in a bit of a hurry to finish the tutorial and the reason for bitmap tracing got lost somewhere on the way:
I have noticed that you cannot achieve a smooth trace of black&white/grayscale bitmaps with Xara's tracer like in Adobe Illustrator or Corel Trace, so I have decided to take advantage of the crappy feature when I like to get scratchy hand drawn images. I often mix scanned images with digitally made line art, and turn the digitally made stuff into fake hand drawn object with the tracing technique.
