I've been doing some tests the past couple of days using the file you provided from your Win98 machine.

On a Win98 machine I installed Xara Xtreme 2.0f (internal file version 3.0.0.4480). Your file opens with the tracking intact as shown in your Before image.

On a WinXP machine using Xtreme 2.0f the file opens with the tracking off as shown in your After image.

On a Vista machine using Xtreme 2.0f and all subsequent versions of Xtreme the file opens with the original tracking as shown in the Before image.

The issue is not with Xtreme but with the way Windows XP renders fonts. I have searched Microsoft Technet and google search results for fonts/font problems in Windows XP. So far no resolution but some similar issues have been reported since XP SP1 was released.

Thanks so much for going to such lengths to troubleshoot this. I really appreciate it. Although I am kind of sorry to hear this is an XP problem as it's less likely Microsoft will care about it, than Xara creators might.

This is really disappointing. I know you are probably thinking, big deal, it's Scriptina and most don't use it. But it just happens that I have a massive number of designs which incorporate this font. I haven't had time to see if the same issue occurs with other elaborate script fonts.

Imagine if this were happening with Arial, or Times. Then more people would want it corrected in a hurry.

I'm going to have to think quick about how I am going to proceed with these designs. Even the suggestion of changing all fonts to shapes would take me a very long time, and then I would have to re-create each design as they evolve.

    Bluntly, this sucks!

I know it is no consolation but I will continue to search for a possible fix for the problem.

It's great consolation, to have another helping out. Thanks!

I just downloaded Typograph, and noticed that Scriptina doesn't display any kerning pair info under Properties, where all the other fonts I have checked (only a few so far) have extensive Kerning info. Maybe this is a clue...

But it still doesn't explain why the font would display properly in 98 and Vista...hmmmm

My Typograph Kerning Pair discovery may be a red herring. I just looked through most of my fonts and many don't have info in the kerning pairs. But you would think a cursive font like Scriptina would require this.

    Hmm.... odd.
I don't have version 2.0f, however opening the 98originalAuto.xar and 98originalNOauto.xar in later versions including the most recent commercial release (XaraXtremePro 3.2.4 CD) when using Vista Ultimate (inc recent updates), shows them both with the tracking 'off' for me.
That is, they both show like this:

Hi Bill, although that looks close, it is still extending past the orange line to the right. I'm not sure what attributes the text in that file had (as I do not have my 98 machine up). You could double check, if you wanted.

I would suggest doing tests using the latest files:
    - 98originalAuto.xar
    and
    - 98originalNOauto.xar

Those files have no adjustments made by me (tracking or kerning). Just the Auto Kerning (AWAW) of Xara Xtreme.

Do THOSE files display correctly on your 98 and VISTA setups?
