Default How do you blend colors in a painting?

Can anyone tell me how to get colors to blend properly in painter (using xp).

i've tried the underlying colour option (see my other post) but ran into problems.

what is the correct way to make colours blend when painting? at the moment any new colour i paint over an existing colour replaces the existing colour.

    thanks in advance

blending colors in painter is a big topic
if you havnt already done so I'd recommend reading the 'editing layers' section in the help - it covers blending with composite layers
it also mentions that picking up the underlying color works with brushes that push paint rather than apply it - it dont work with just any old brush
painter is very complex it takes a lot of getting into
I see from your other thread post that you have been to lynda.com, and also have seen the post here:
    http://www.talkgraphics.com/showthread.php?t=23739
jinny may well be able to help you sort this out, mean time if you can be more specific I'll try, but I have not seen the lynda.com video either

The resat level is the secret.
Check pick up underlying colors on the top layer.
Adjust the resat to achieve the desired blend level, 100% =no blending, full strenght color, at 0% = full blend, no color.

makes no difference m8. i'd have thought it would be standard for colours to blend and mix rather than just go over the top of them. the lynda.com tutorial does it perfectly (albeit on a mac) - the same settings on xp dont work.

there must be a way to blend colours surely.

bit rough and ready cos i'm tired
    artists oils blender bristle
2 layers above canvas both default ignore
blue on the lowest as per left - pick up underlying colour ticked
applying yellow on upper gives you the effect on right on upper
is this what your after - or am I still missing it?

the lynda.com tutorial does it perfectly (albeit on a mac) - the same settings on xp dont work.
I have never seen the tutorial you speak of, blending works just fine on my machine, I use XP.

    Here are some steps.

1 paint a blob of color on the canvas.
2 create a new layer and check pickup underlying color.
3 adjust the resat level to 25%.
4 paint on top of the blob of color you placed on the canvas.
My colors mix as I paint.

The object of creating a new layer is just to preserve the canvas layer, its not required you can blend and smudge on any layer you choose.
Make sure you don't have preserve transparency selected.

Maybe you should try the blending brushes, my favorite is the grainy water blender.

Mike which brush do you use for that example please - thing is, it works for some brushes but not for others - this has always been my understanding?
    Thanks

For the example I used the one mentioned in that other thread. The Arcylics captured bristle.

yep I don't have a problem with that - one thing I would say, there is a difference between the painter IX and painter X default brush variants for this brush and the tutorials for lynda.com as I understand it are for painter IX specifically.
this means of course that anyone using painter X may have to experiment with the settings to get it to work.
as I dont know what the lynda.com settings were or what version of painter you were using BadBoY House, without further details, thats all I can say at this stage I'm afraid.
if there really is an issue with the tutorial - as they are paid subscription, maybe take it up with them?

    Hi,

    Read the thread named:

Trouble with "Pick Up Underlying Color"?

Both Resat/Resaturation and Bleed slider settings affect how much a brush variant will blend color, whether on the Canvas or a Layer, or on a Layer with the Pick Up Underlying Color box checked.

Resat/Resaturation controls how much color is painted in the brush stroke.

Bleed controls how much existing color is picked up and mixed with the current color, in the brush stroke.

Again, these two controls work together to make a brush variant blend color, to one degree or another, depending on the Resat/Resaturation and Bleed slider settings.

With Resat/Resaturation at 0% and Bleed at 100% the brush variant only blends existing color.

With Resat/Resaturation at 100% and Bleed at 0%, the brush variant only paints color and does not blend at all.

Check the Brush Controls' Well palette Resat/Resaturation and Bleed slider settings for the Blenders variants to see that, in their default state, none of them paint color (unless, with some of them, you move the Resat/Resaturation slider up from 0%).
