What should I set my image H/W to to have an 8/10inch picture at a reasonable DPI?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think what I'll do is make my images 2400/3000. The default is 96dpi. When I export the images, I'll jack the dpi to 300. That will inflate the h/w of the images but, as mentioned above, the printer can then shrink it.

If you export a 96dpi image at 300dpi the image is still going to be 96dpi and you will not have gained anything.

Reduce the imported image to the size you want it to print, then export it at 300dpi.

I'm left with my original problem then. I've attached an image which might illustrate better the solution I'm looking for.
