have you set your scratch disks correctly - assuming you have more than one hard drive on your system, which you really do need for photoshop to work well with large files/tasks, you should set your scratch disk[s] up to a separate physical disk from the one your system/photoshop is on and it should ideally be used for nothing else in order to ensure plenty of free contiguous space

no guarantees just something to check in preferences
