you know I've not experimented with masks yet. this is a very original mask-shape. fraid your going to have to tell me what you mean by scallop? I like your bug--neat and clear and fits just right in there. suppose it's a cicada or locust??
nance
"scuse the ignorance, but what is EGD?

Nance,
A view of the shape. I made a vector drawing of the basic shape. Then applied various other strokes to the curved path for a variation in the edge. I just need to break the path, and only apply the stroke to that part. These are saved to grayscale bitmaps. In Expression, the white areas are transparent. I drew a rectangle and applied a scallop stroke. Strokes flow along the path, and you can see the resulting shape. I filled the rectangle to black, and saved to a bitmap.
Extreme does nicely with the image to make something transparent. White would be full transparent, and variations with gray. It is non destructive, and can be edited for position and shape.
Alan,
Expression Gaphic Designer. Something I have had for years, and just learing to use to draw. It was developed by Creature House, and was bought by Microsoft.

A mask constructed in Extreme. There were a few artifacts at the corners, and I made a white brush to paint them out. Rich
gottcha, thanks. I see you brought back that very colorful 'view'. always wanted to ask about that...what can you tell me?

Nance,
That is Capitola by the Sea. Near where I grew up.
I added a view of Santa Cruz.
Rich
never heard of Capitola by the sea. it looks Old World(is it)?? how did you get the colors like that?
thanks
nance
Capitola was there before me, very ancient. It is on the Monterey Bay just below Santa Cruz. I replaced the sky in both images. I was trying various saturation methods. I made a white brush in Xara, and set its transparency to saturation. This allowed me to paint on localized saturation. A non destructive method.
A smaller version of the image and the separating object is attached.
Rich
Thanks for the info about EGD. I did check out the Microsoft web site. How do the capabilities and functionality of EGD compare with other programs like Xara, Paintshop, or Coreldraw?

Alan
