    This "tool" has always intrigued me. It is very useful; it has a very odd shape. For lack of a better name I call it a wrench knuckle.

    i know that in a car that's what this is called but as a tool is it called that too?

    It's part of a specialised set of tools called "thingamibobs"..

    yes.. that's the official name for it...they typically come in 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and larger drives for your ratchet and sockets... allowing you to get to nuts/bolts that aren't in a straight path.
