the screenshot of my Linux system on the laptop. Transparency: no problem. Virus attacks: ha, ha. No chance - the highly configurable built-in firewall handles everything. Mail server filters: just configure them and say good-by to spam forever - it'll already be killed on the server, so you don't waste dl times and bandwidth.
Richard, you should try 'Kontour', a vector app that's included in the KDE package as well. It's the 'old' 'Killustrator' app which made Adobe ranting and sending troops of lawyers - this is the reason why they changed the name.
And no, you don't need an internet browser anymore. Linux doesn't differentiate between local and remote files, so everything displays in the file folder - including full fledged ftp.
Do I need to mention the small footprints of the installed apps?
I can set up some codes to pass through ANY firewall on ANY windows machine, reading the content of your hard drive etc. There is no way to block it, except you'll kill your internet connection. This 'feature' was bugging me all the time I ran W2K pro. So I ran a test with my Linux machines - none of the codes could read anything.
Good news? You bet!
Still waiting for Xara's Linux version <sigh>

I have been using Opera for at least 6 months for most of my browsing before that is was exclusively IE. I think I probably browse as much as anyone else, so don't really understand how Gary's drive got so filled up. My Drive is 2 years old this month and is 18 gig with 16 gig free.
Now to my question where does Opera store cookies and it's history? I went looking and couldn't find anything.
Judi

The file is in the Program Files/Opera folder. Called 'cookies4.dat' and I'm not sure where the History info is. You may be able to find that info in the Prefs in the browser itself. I run Opera 7 (they need to release a finishing patch for this thing before I get really serious about using it).
Amazing how much crap gets saved when your out browsing. I had quite a few Mb's of junk already and I'm only running this new set up for, what? a month or a little longer now?? So I guess it depends on what you do on your computer and how you have the settings set up, part of it anyway.
Gary, I found a really nice app today for cleaning up the hard drive. It's free for personal use and it's very thorough. I did end up, just to be safe, removing most of the files extentions in it's default list and then went ahead and let it do it's things. It's very robust for being a free application. Here is the link to
AE Technologies Software and the app is called Clean Disk 2002. Hope it helps ya out, I like it!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Those struggling with the Instant Messenger or stupid Netscape adverts in Netscape 7 --- just download Mozilla.
The Mozilla browser is open source and is free to download, and is practically identical to Netscape 7, because it IS Netscape 7.
Netscape take the Mozilla browser, rebrand it to "Netscape", add in the adverts, the silly IM client, and then make it availble for download.
Take a trip to http://www.mozilla.org/releases/stable.html
Jens, very nice looking desktop.
Richard, Thank you for the "Clean Disk" Heads up.

I have to agree with Daniel on this one. Mozilla is much the same as Netscrape. Add in all the commercial crap and that annoying messenger thingy and you have Netscrape. Take all that away and you have Mozilla. The code is very clean, it IS fast, faster than Opera (hate to admit it) and there are some really cool buttons skins (I love Orbit, totally cool http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/cool.gif ).
So if you are not interested in paying for Opera (sans the add banners if you choose the free version) are tired of IE and MS's bull$hit then give the Mozilla a try. Imports IE and Netscrape favorite browsing links.
The only thing I DON'T care for is that if you try to use the menu choices to organize your favorite links, well it's broken. You have to drag the folders and the links and alphabetize them by hand. That sux!!
Also, DO NOT mess with the "Check to see if Mozilla is the Default Browser" if you click on that button it will take over completely. I was only testing it out and I clicked on that button and from then on IE was just sitting there. Mozilla has NO WAY to turn that feature off once you choose it and I couldn't find in IE where to have it take back over, so I had to un-install Mozilla to get my defaults back for IE.
BAD bad Mozilla, Raaaaraah!! Down boy, down!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
That's it though!! It's great other than those two glitches!!
Go for it Gary!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

There is even an IE Skin if you fancy it.

They worked for me... not tested heavily, though I used those last week without any problems. I got confused by the beta test 1.1 and 1.2, the stable release is 1.02 and seems later than beta 1.2.... misunderstanding or not, the stable 1.02 is here

That is a little ruthless of Mozilla. The way I found around it was with MS's new panel in Control Panel... I think it appeared on my PC after Windows 2000 SP3, and is part of Windows XP SP1 as well - click Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Set Program Access & Defaults.... you can select "Internet Explorer" to be the default there... see attachment
I regularly get at least a 30-50 mg reduction in my total files on my hard drive (C) when using Cleanup, or when I used to use WindowWasher.
1 - I save my cookies to a folder called My Cookies in My Docs.
2 - I empty the browser caches in Opera and Netscape. I haven't yet figured out what Mozilla uses for a browser cache. (WindowWasher can be configured to empty these caches for you.)
3 - I use my cleanup utility and then put my cookies back into C:\Windows\Cookies.
4 - I defragment my C Drive and all partitions using the Win98 defrag utility.
I do this procedure about twice a month. The defragging goes quickly if you do it often.
I also run AdAware every two weeks.
I have a little less than 1 gig on my C drive and find that my whole system runs best when I keep my C drive lean and mean. 95% of my programs are on partitions. I only have my operating system and browsers on C drive. (And a few programs that refuse to install anywhere BUT on C drive.)
Richard,
I love Mozilla too. Thanks for the tip about checking to see if its the default browser. Yuck!

Hello,
I use Windows 2000 and there is a hidden folder in Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files named Content.IE5, and there you can find many , many hidden files, and offline content. (Not sure about other versions...)
If you can't see this folder, go to Windows Explorer, -Tools, -Folder Options, and in the -View Tab, set the Show Hidden Files and Folders option.
Check the amount of disk on this folder.
To avoid this problem, you can go in IE Tools, -Internet Options, -Settings button, and put 1 MB in the Amount Of Disk Space to Use option.
Saludos,
Juan
