Ok... Well this really looks like my mistake somewhere in the code, i don't have much corrupt files to test at (thankfully). Something like this definitely shouldn't happen with files created by Expander.

What version of Xtreme created that file? It may containt new records i havent encountred in my files so dont know about any problems with them.
Can you give me whole output? Output redirection to file can do the job: xar.exe -remove 2843 0 output.xar output1.xar > log.txt
That could help finding the problem.

I've been little too enthusiastic after that succesful conversion to xml
No idea whats the correct number to use, in fact the number may be even something different and be totally useles in this situation. That error message is not clear... just guessing :/ Maybe someone knows what exactly it means

Here is the log file in attachment.
I guess the file was created with the version of Xtreme 4.0.0.4916 though I'm not completely sure about the build number.

Thank you very much for you help

Xtreme 4 explains this Good... Latest documentation doesnt yet cover new X4 features so i cant "learn" the tool to understand them but removing any checks seems to help.

http://suvek.redart.cz/xar/xar2.zip contains updated exe that dont panic at every new X4 record.

    Another shot

    Oh My God!! You're a life saver!! http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/standart/yahoo.gif http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/standart/dance2.gif http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/standart/dance4.gif

Thank you so much! Xtreme was very surprised after I removed the problem record and showed me a warning box about some data it can't read now but it opened the file and I see all the content!

Thats good to hear Looks like removed record was locked live effect (TAG_LOCKED_EFFECT 4126 - second number in error message)

that's strange.. for I don't used locked effect usually.

By the way I had another crash a couple of days ago and tried to restore it with your utility... This time I had to remove 5-6 problem handles and finally the utility managed to fix the file http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/standart/victory.gif
But still the half of the drawing was lost http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/standart/cray.gif

I guess the problem is really LiveEffects, because nearly all the parts with them disappered.

Do you still have the original damaged file? It may be possible to disable those effects without removing objects associated with them. "-remove" option can make the file readable but it is a little too destructive

    Yes I still have it.
I converted it to XML to look what goes wrong there and it seems all he problem records are similar

    <live_effect xml:id="sn1476" Flags="0" DPI="0.000000" EffectID="Enhance" DisplayName="Enhance" EditsXML="">

I can only guess that it's the empty EditsXML parameter that causes problems.
I tried to remove those live effects manually (left the inner data groups untouched but removed outer open and close live_effect tags and compoundrender tags). File is readable but still the most data is missing. Don't know if it is a reading problem or they weren't written to the file actually.

I've experienced the Cannot Handle Record etc. error msg with three different xara documents that used live effects.

Where ExpandXar failed and all hope was lost your tool worked wonders, thanks Suvek.

Btw, the tool was unable to recover the files using the the last four numbers but rather the first set. For the time being I will refain from using live effects.
