I'm not a new member but since we are talking about book design. This is the cover for a monograph on a soldier who died 20 years after Vietnam from exposure to agent orange. The photo is a stock photo from ShutterStock.

I am currently working on a novel by the same author (my wife). There is something very soothing about laying out a book.

Sorry Gary, I did a serious comment that disappeared. I tried again just posting a full-stop to test my connection

    Thanks for feedback TimS!
It gives me confidence, since it is the first book I'm producing.
    Cheers

Thanks for sharing your book cover Gary!
I'm learning design by trial and error, posts like this one, and for sure observing great works as references for my own work.
I'm a scholar in Education who love design, but never studied it formally.
    Indeed, as a whole:

Specifically regarding the cover, I felt it challenger, since 300-400 pages "mood" needs to be translated into a single meaningful "page".
    Cheers!

Thank you. I was never a good scholar, but I have been a designer all my life.

    Hi Gary,
I see an expert on the 13th about exposure to agent orange.
I was in the Navy and don't think I was ever exposed, but due to the fact that I was on land a couple of times over there, (Cam Ranh Bay, and Danang, and multiple landings of Marines on the beaches) my primary doctor wants me to see this expert.
I can't imagine at 70 years old, there would be any problem, but who knows.

    Carlos,

The book cover looks good. The only comment I would make is to verify your bleed on the cover. I am not sure the picture you posted has the bleed on it or not, because the edge of the chair is close to the right edge of the cover. If the picture includes the bleed then when the cover is made you may have the chair back off the edge of the cover. This can also be effected if you add more pages internally and do not adjusted the spine size.

    Nicely done Carlos.
RKissane brings up an excellent point.

Never give up. You will never fail, but you may find a lot of ways that don't work.
