Thread: RGB-CMYK

    Hi.

I use Photoshop for photo correction/adjustment and converting images to CMYK.

My question: if I import a RGB bitmap into XaraX, change the document colour space to CMYK and save out as a CMYK TIFF, is that bitmap now a nice, shiny CMYK image? If so, out goes Photoshop, in comes the far-easier-to-use Paint Shop Pro http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

What I have not done, and maybe someone out there has and can report back, is compare the printed output of a Xara created CMYK TIFF and one that has been changed to CMYK in Photoshop.

I have to admit that I still change mode to CMYK in Photoshop although I have used a few Xara CMYK TIFFs. But I have not done a comparrison of output.

Charles Moir swears that the Xara CMYK TIFF is better than the Photoshop version but I have no way of checking.

Actually, I suppose I could place one of each in Quark or InDesign and see how they look on my deskjet printer. That might help.

Well, that also depends on the printer's color calibration, is it not?

    Thanks Egg.

OK My deskjet printer is pretty accurate, thanks to a good color profile.

I exported an image from Xara as CMYK and converted the same image from RGB to CMYK in Photoshop and printed the two out of InDesign.

Both printed images look good but the Xara image actually does have a bit more density and some of the subtlty that was lost in the Photoshop version is there in the Xara version.

Chalk up a big one for Xara and Charles, I never doubted you http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Thanks for doing that test Gary. It's very interesting that XaraX is better than Photoshop at this. Think I will sell it (Photoshop). I note that Google's Picasa2, which is free, has pretty advanced photo-editing features which work very well indeed. This is all starts to make Photoshop look very overpriced...

    Thanks again.
