clone and paintbrush problem

Photoshop CE has developed a problem.When I try to use the clone stamp or paintbrush tool they do not work. However if I make the paintbrush really big I can see that it is drawing a very thin line.
Can anyone help.

Are you using a graphics tablet? Maybe it's the pressure sensitivity profile or something...

Thanks for your interest, but it happens if I am using an ordinary mouse.
