geez, that's strange. The boolean operation is a very simple one in this case, and if you don't convert the results to polygons it should be done almost in real time - NURBS are a lot faster than polygon operations. On my PII 300 MHz with 'only' 192 MB RAM laptop I've tried to build a similar object - no problems here. Almost real time. OK, I'm running v7, but as far as I know Cinema/Maxon has optimized th code for v8 again.
Rendering: if you use volumentric lighting the 8 minutes are ok. Volumetric lighting and renderosity and caustic are memory eaters ;-}, even if the settings are minimal.
So I'm thinking about your scene and what might be wrong with it.
