ctrl+1 or ctrl+J do not do what you want ?
what do you mean by 'complex' line.. there is no means of adjusting winding rule in xara

Wait, Control+1 means "Add Shapes" yes?
If so this seems convert each line into a shape, using the current width of the line.
But I don't want to create a new shape out of the line!
I repeat, I only want to join the two lines together keeping them as lines... (and only later do I want to join the ends of the line!)
My two lines are just lines that I have created using the Shape tool (F4) clicking on multiple points and then smoothing the joins...
you will need to convert the lines to editable shape first, and so do it with a copies if you want to maintain editability...
lines you should be able to join in the usual way ?

if you want to end up with a joined line, not shape, then select the end nodes and join with shape or freehand tool ?

This is how I join lines.
Place then end nodes over each other.
Select both.
Switch to the Shape Tool (F4).
Pull the top end node away and drop it back onto the lower node.
This should join the two shapes when the pointer changes to a +.
Repeat with the last node pair and you create a Shape.
