Never give up. You will never fail, but you may find a lot of ways that don't work.

Acorn - installed Xara software: Cloud+/Pro+ and most others back through time (to CC's Artworks). Contact for technical remediation/consultancy for your web designs.
When we provide assistance, your responses are valuable as they benefit the community. TG Nuggets you might like. Report faults: Xara Cloud+/Pro+/Magix Legacy; Xara KB & Chat
also don't get hung up on symmetry - perfect symmetry does not exist in nature on the macro level
using just a slight offset, as in my examples with the eyes, can make it a bit more natural with less of the cardboard cut out feel - but it needs to be subtle....

@handrawn, that's it. Small eyes, small mouth, large nose.
I actually like Larry's version the best, more traditional and majestic. Shame it lost the scribble.
larrys version reminds me of a mask; it is very good

I know I post a few things on this forum, but I am in fact in the same predicament and frustration. Most of what I do tends to just happen by chance (one thing leading to another) rather than design. The thing is, you've got the idea and concept in your head.
I've not done this myself (yet!), but I believe one way to get over this is to learn to draw with pencil and paper and keep practicing to build up hand/brain coordination. My bookshelf is littered with books gathering dust with titles like 'Learn to draw in a weekend' and 'An introduction to drawing'. The problem is I get excited about the prospect of getting stuck in, but then don't!
Meanwhile here's capybara (a giant rodent native to South America) or an unhappy alien.
