Question about version or name

I was reading a material on internet and realized two things have been mentioned there and want to know what is the difference between Macromedia Flash MX and Macromedia Flash MX2004? Is it the same and just a short name for it?

Flash MX is Flash 6 whilst Flash MX 2004 is Flash 7, the latest version. I think there's a beta of Flash 8 around so a new release isn't far away.
