    Info Variable Fonts

A non-starter for XDAs at v16 and under.

    Who knows: https://v-fonts.com/.

There are a number of free fonts here and a host at Google Fonts.

    Enjoy.

Yes. And in the few (mainly Adobe) desktop applications that do/can use variable fonts, I know of none that can properly turn out a valid pdf for printing purposes. Same goes for color fonts. QuarkXPress is the only application I know of that can use them properly. And it can use 3 of 4 types versus 1 type in Adobe applications. Adobe warns about using them and expecting proper pdf output for either font technology at this time.

The axes in the variable font spec are still not all static, the spec is still being revised and axes are still being registered. Until the spec becomes more concrete, and unless an application only exposes certain axes to the user that are "stable," I don't see the technology being anything more than what one Adobe person who is involved calls them: Experimental.

Certain axes do work fine in browsers.

Never give up. You will never fail, but you may find a lot of ways that don't work.

    Agree with your opinion.
Now imagine Xara accommodating the implementation within its application and generating HQ bitmap for PDFs and browsers until they all caught up. Market share might drive Xara into creating a VF generator.

It has all its Xara Cloud developers primed and ready.

Adobe used to have what they called Multiple Master fonts. Not sure if they still have them or not. They were not as intuitive as the ones you linked to.

I'm sure sometime in 2035 someone at Xara is going to say "Ahh, variable fonts. Perhaps we can incorporate that into our web design software ..."

Keith, by then Xara Desktop applications (XDA) will be retro steampunk anyhow as the Internet will not be there and XDAs pre version 10 will have come into their own.
