That, however, will create the text/image sitting on top of the image so the image can still be abstracted.

Even if you Group or Soft-group, the text and image may still be kept separate in the output.
Apply Clipview works well as does Apply opacity mask.
The former needs a Transparency, the latter does it more easily by change the text colour. This gives individual glyph transparency control.
