That will overlay it with an identical copy.
Keep this copy selected, open the Shape Editor and break the shape at the points (with the icon "break at points" in the Status Line) which marks the extremities of the line you want to create. Then select only that part of the outline and give it the width you want. You can then apply a stroke shape or a brush to it. After that, select carefully the part of the outline you don't need and simply delete it. Group the two objects remaining (your line and your shape).

a particular context in which you want/need to do this? I ask because perhaps if we knew what you are trying to achieve, you can be advised more readily of appropriate techniques.
If it is just a rectangle you are interested in: toggle on "snap to objects" and with the shape editor tool click on one corner and then the other. That will create a line where you want it. If it is a line on the edge of a more complicated shape that you want I'd do it the way Ivan describes. (He's-da-man!).
