brushes only persist in a file they are used in [unless you externally add them to the library]
so just delete all instances, save exit and reload the file

Ha, so they do...not that I doubted you. I'd better go and learn how to save them permanently now just in case I ever make one that's actually worth saving.
I've never really played around with brushes before. No doubt I'll attack them constantly for 48 hours and then never bother again. Not an artist, so no real need for brushes...or have I just not discovered a use yet?
just save a xar file with one brush stroke [for each brush in the file] - you can then load this xar file and use the brushes across other open files in the same session
to have them open by default you need to save them in the Xara brush folder, but it is not a good idea to have too many in this because it can hog memory
C:\Program Files\Xara\Xara Designer Pro X\15.1\Templates\ENG\Brushes [depending on your version]

Yup, I'll go with the xar file method. I'm famous for thinking something is the best thing ever...then realising it's monkey poo a week or so later. It's far easier to flush xar files than mess around mining through 7 layers of folders.
I'll just keep this one I made today though. It's the best thing ever!
If you want delete custom brushes you can:
1. open the Line gallery
2. open Document brushes folder (at top of list)
3. right click on the brush and select Delete

That's a winner! In-house and sophisticated. I shall now make poorly thought through brushes knowing I can delete them at will just by looking at a thumbnail.
Thank you both.
you are welcome
