how were the transparent backgrounds created in PS?
if you use tools such as magic eraser, or magic wand, or use a layer blend, these do not always guarantee a 100% transparent background

As Fin stated I have had this happen with vector art and the bounding box over a background color. The bounding box appears to not have a true transparency on some colors. In order to send to the printer, I had to make the object a bitmap which corrected everything.
This does not explain Lew's problem which I believe caused by something different.

I may have discovered a solution to this problem. When exporting to PDF use PDF/x-4. The light boxes no longer appear around graphics and photos. PDF/X-4 supports transparency in pdf files.
