can someone point me to where a beginner can get a basic grasp of the adaptive web design? I started to read the article and realized I need a better understanding of the fundamentals.

You may want to look into this and more videos on here. Remember the way xara works is that it uses one code to make the adaptive sizes. So this guy comment on the disadvantages of using adaptive does not imply to the way xara works. The guys at xara are geniuses
