Mike - I just created a PDF/X from the Xara file. Not sure what PDF setting would have exported the car drawing as bitmap. In my test file the car exported as a vector object. And not sure why bu my PDF is considerable smaller in file size.

Likely two things. One, I converted the text to curves when I generated the PDF. Two, probably the largest increase comes from my PDF having ICC tagged content.
Rendering of vectors varies from program to program. Even though it's technically smooth as can be, rendering is everything.
