Does importing a png into any xara program turn it into a jpg on screen?

No. It should import as a PNG.

Thanks.
handrawn I never seen that. Considering all the images are not linked to a file when saved, it must change them all into jpg when saved as a xara file. But regardless, it was just a curiosity question. Thank you.
I am curious too - are you saying that if you import PNG files and then save the xar/web file, close, and reopen, they are then JPG ?
I've never seen that in a xar file, they reopen as PNG files for me
the message I posted is usually only seen if you import a large image [by default greater then about 1920 pixels]; the program designers appear to assume that everything is a photo, be that right or wrong

Steve is right. I had forgotten this. There is a dialog that says some images would be better as JPEG that I think is the default. I disable this with XaReg.

handrawn that is okay, whatever the programmers did keeps the png pictures as png's I assume. The reason is as you know a jpg once resaved will degrade in quality and that was a concern whereas png does not.
sure - the only other thing is if it's a web document... - I understand that in some instances, when images are optimised, they get converted to jpg [but I could be wrong, as I don't make websites in xara]
I totally agree about the degradation - and if the image is not continuous tone I don't think it should ever be in a lossy format [and I'm not even convinced for photos, except where the compression is more important than the possible quality issues]

This is the setting in XaReg that disables the warning/suggestion
