How do I put a blank line into a numbered list?

Quick question:
How do I put a blank line into a numbered list?

Background
I have tried hitting Shift/Enter at the end of a line or Control/Enter or Alt/Enter, but every time I create a new line the new line is always numbered.... whereas sometime one wants a blank line (or two) between items!
When working with a document who's design is still quite fluid automatic re-numbering is important. And it is very unhelpful not to be able to move stuff around and get it automatically re-numbered.

What you want to do is Insert the number of numbered list entries you want, then put the text caret to the numbered entry above where you want the blank space and press Shift + Enter. e.g.
1. List Item 1
2. List Item 2 (Insert text caret here and press Shift + Enter)
3. List Item 3
Becomes :
1. List Item 1
2. List Item 2

3. List Item 3

Confused - what is a "text caret" and how do I insert one?
Do you mean the "^" character?

Sorry about the terminology, the text caret/ text cursor is the flashing vertical line, so when you select into the text area, select at the end of the line, and then press Shift + Enter to add a new, non numbered line.

I still don't get this. Please can you tell me what key strokes to hit!
I tried going to where I want the new blank line and holding down Shift, pressing Enter and then releasing Shift. However all that happens is that I get a *numbered* blank line.

e.g.

1. List Item 1
2. List Item 2 (Insert text caret here and press Shift + Enter)
3. List Item 3

Becomes:
1. List Item 1
2. List Item 2
3.
4. List Item 3

make a text box first (select Text and drag/create a rectangle area), then select Create Numbered List, type in your list. then you can go to the end of any line and press Shift+Enter to add a blank line. won't do it if you just start typing without making a text box first.

It's really straight forward. Right at the end of your text line when you want to put in a line space,(to use your example "List item 2" right at the end of 2) hold down shift and hit return. For the next line after that when you want the numbering to restart just hit return and your consecutive numbering will restart. Sorry please replace return with Enter

not really if you don't start with a text box (i usually don't). it won't work otherwise

Works for me.

Mikey - There are two ways to do this, drag a text area, and drag a line of text. This is similar to dragging a text area except you drag to the right but not down.
