Huge thanks to John (Zaphodeist Priest) for suggesting I try Installing Windows 10 using the Windows Media Tool and it worked.
If like me you have had repeated failures to download and install Windows 10, this is the answer.

Good for you Gary. Humans 1 Computers 0, in this case at least. And well done John for the suggestion.
Glad to hear of your success Gary!

Never give up. You will never fail, but you may find a lot of ways that don't work.
That's great news Gary. I still haven't had the time to do it. how did the process go?

see - we techies said you could do it that way.. and you did !
well done
I take it you didn't download the ISO and make a DVD - that could be useful later on for maintenance, but it's by no means essential

I just went for the download and install and it took about one hour start to finish. I just left the room and we had coffee and when I came back it was up and running.

ah dear old acronis I have used ye almost as long as xara... yes a system image backup is cool, I made one with win 10 upgrade keeping all my settings and one with win 10 upgrade clean [not keeping] just in case I decided to go that route idc
but making a win 10 DVD from the upgrade ISO could be useful for running things like diskpart outside of the OS was what I was thinking [see my current sig below - do not do this if you don't know what it means ]
