Re: cloud.xara discussion thread
I'm not sure which direction this cloud editing is going to take Jon. At present it's so rudimentary as to be of no use at all. Why would I choose to edit any site using such a primative interface? On the other hand, does Xara intend to develop the cloud interface so much that eventually it's an exact replica of the desktop version? Fne for me to edit from wherever but my client editing the same file? I'm going to have to give some serious tutorials to the client which will take far longer than the time it took me to create the original site.
If I want to go along the route of the client being able to edit all the content, I'd much rather create a full blown CMS site.
However, what I do find interesting is many of my clients don't need full blown CMS sites (They may say they do, but they've no concept of what's required). This would be a great niche for the Xara Cloud. Most of my clients just want to occassionally edit opening hours, basic pricing structures and amend some small text content.
I've given Xara Cloud a trial on this using Google Drive and indeed it works. I could amend a text block which I'd set to push as the text increased in length and on publishing, indeed the page grew to accomodate the new length. I like the promise that offers for the future. At present it's far to buggy for even me as an experienced Xara user to feel comfortable with, let alone a client. Even the extended text outside the text area can not be selected with the text tool for example. How do you explain that to a non Xara user?
But I'm reserving my judgement. If Xara can get it to work on a very simple text editor fashion such a site would suit many of my current & future clients.
