Here's an animation with very simple origins. It's just 4 grids coloured C M Y K and moved about. The result is just a Moire effect. I like the way in parts it almost creates a tartan look.

I like it. Makes me wonder if one could do something similar just to get that dot effect without the animation.

Never give up. You will never fail, but you may find a lot of ways that don't work.
Certainly Larry. Here's the xar I used as the origin of the animation. It's just a grid pattern but as you resize the grid you can see definite "dots" appear that aren't really there, just an optical illusion. Overlaying one above another and resizing creates interesting results as well.
EDIT: Whoops, uploaded the wrong xar!

I've done this in the past to explain why CMYK printing angles the halftone screens to avoid Moire patterns.
The attached is not my image (but I swear back in the Xara Xone Workbook series I did this. I'll have to check.
Ha! Found it. http://www.xaraxone.com/webxealot/workbook35/page_5.htm Someone has ripped me off without attribution.

I found one instance on ImageMagick's web site.

Most of the way to the bottom of the page.
Says that the image must have communicated well enough for at least two people to have "borrowed" it.
