Regarding beams: I can see where the beam advocates are coming from but I think they might be wrong. It may be that the bridge sides behave as big trusses than span without secondary support. The floor joists would span between the two sidewalls as would the roof framing that braces the sidewalls from buckling. The finished construction is in effect a tube --- If you cut big holes in the sidewalls, or took off the roof framing, it might collapse. At that point the lawyers would start looking for the engineer.
