When importing AI files, the layers are lost. Is this a limitation of Xara, or am I missing something?

pretty sure that AI layers are not supported - doesn't work for me and never has

I get layers when importing AI files in X9...but the layer names are such:
Layer from PDF (2)
Layer from PDF
And so on. Same sort of thing with a PDF that, in the PDF, the layers are named appropriately. The difference is that they are named:
Optional Content Layer from PDF (2)
Optional Content Layer from PDF
Neither are super helpful but at least they can be renamed.
ok mike thanks - maybe it depends on version of xara in use

checked this - it works with CS2 AI import and with CS2 PDF import into xara designer pro 8 - but layer renaming as mike said
no idea what I was thinking of, sorry - probably asleep
but if it is not working for you then maybe it is an older version of AI file, or are you using an older version of xara?

Indeed. The AI file, exported from Rhino 5, is of the old Postscript based format. When imported into Illustrator, the layers are shown correctly, but not when imported into Xara Pro X10. Here all geometry is merged into one layer, which makes the import useless: The layers have a meaning. One layer is for cutting (laser cutter), the other for marking.
so you can't save it out from illustrator into a more recent version of AI [or PDF] ?

can you upload a sample?
See attachment. One layer is for cutting on a laser cutter, the other for marking.
